When a Parent has a Mental illness

In this short film young carers talk about their lives caring for a parent with mental illness. Narrated by Chineye, a young carer herself, the film also explains in a very simple and visual way how the brain works and what happens when things go wrong.

Tulisa: My Mum and Me (documentary)

Tulisa Contostavlos (from the music band N-Dubz) has cared for her mum with Schizoaffective disorder since she was a child.
In this documentary she draws on her own experiences, which included seeing her mum forcibly sectioned in psychiatric care when she was five years old.
Tulisa explores the day-to-day realities of caring for a mentally ill parent and finds that the effects can be overwhelming and often endured with little outside support.
She discovers that there is help available, notably young carers groups where people can meet others in the same boat.
Tulisa also looks into the difficult topic of heredity, asking whether her own hectic rock-star lifestyle is putting her at risk of developing an illness like her mum's.

A montage of the Eastenders storyline about Stacey and her mum Jean.

Lacy Turner played Stacey Slater in Eastenders. Stacey arrives in Walford age 15. It is revealed that Stacey had a troubled childhood, due to Jean's Bipolar disorder and the death of her father when she was 11, after which Sean (her brother) abandoned the family and left Stacey as Jean's sole carer.

The storyline won a Mental Health Media Award in September 2006.
